LA and Hollywood: Charity Headshot Shoot
Given that the headshot is perhaps the quintessential LA photograph, the unit on LA and Hollywood will take as its basis a charity head shot shooting session. Theater students will be invited to have headshots taken during our November 20 th class. The labor will be divided up such that students will perform multiple roles throughout the shoot. The printing will be divided evenly amongst students.
Theater students will be charged $30 for a package that includes a roll of film, contact sheet, and two copies of an 8x10 print. The money collected will go to a charity selected by our class. In this way, we will be able to give something back to the city which we have been studying. The entire shoot will happen during our November 15 th class. Theater students desiring headshots will be accommodated on a first come/first serve basis.
Students will receive a grade for this project based on the successful meeting of deadlines. It is essential that you make prints in the darkroom to the best of your ability. If you have consistently been having technical difficulties it is important that you seek help from me during my office hours, during open lab, or by appointment, or that you seek help from Lisa Ohlweiler.
This has the potential to be a rewarding and fun project. However, if deadlines are not met and responsibilities are not taken seriously, it has the potential to be a fiasco. Please take your responsibilities seriously!
Timeline/Assignments:
Due November 8 : Everyone in the class needs to make a sign advertising this event and the sign should be hung in a strategic location (ie: near theater building, near cafeterias, other high traffic areas). Signs will be brought to class and you will receive a grade for doing it. The signs should essentially just be informational and include the following information: Location (Burns 152), Date (November 20), Time (11-1:30). A small paragraph explaining the project, the fact that students will be charged $30 and that all money will go to charity, and the fact that the event is first come/first served should be on the sign.
Due: November 29 : Head Shot prints and contact sheets are due at the beginning of class. If prints are not satisfactory, students will be required to reprint them for the following class.
Evaluation
This project will not be graded in the traditional format. Instead the grade will be based on completion of tasks. The breakdown is as follows:
Sign/Poster 10%
Participation on Day of Shoot: %30
Completion of Technically Proficient Prints: %60%
Charities
As voted upon in class, the charity that the project will be supporting is the Skid Row Housing Trust.
Breakdown of Labor
Two shooting stations will be set up. Each student station will have a photographer and three assistants. 2 Students will work checking in participants, and 4 will work developing film as it comes in. Halfway through the session we will switch positions.
